05/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - Uzbek President Islam Karimov decided on 1 August to abolish the death penalty as of 1 January 2008. There are between 60 (the official number) and one hundred (NGO estimate) executions per year in Uzbekistan. Abolition of the death penalty is a priority of the Council of Europe and of the European Union.
