Seven Heads of State want to give Europe fresh confidence

Brussels, 15/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a text published in several European dailies, seven Heads of State - Hors Köhler of Germany, Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi of Italy, Jorge Sampaio of Portugal, Heinz Fischer of Austria, Tarja Halonen of Finland and Latvian national Vaira Vike-Freiberga - said on Friday that they were “united in getting Europe its confidence back”. The result of the referendums in France and the Netherlands showed that many citizens were discontent with European politics not living up to their expectations. To remedy this, they suggest a still “more democratic, transparent and effective” Europe and call for mechanisms to be set in place to fully involve citizens in the European project. After the European Council's failure in June, the seven Heads of State say they must find ways to allow citizens to express their views together and as often as possible on questions of common interest, and also call on their counterparts for greater willingness to compromise, noting that solidarity is in the interests of all Member States. The text recalls the importance of infrastructure investment and also investment in training and research. It stresses the need to strengthen security cooperation and the fight against terrorism.
