EPP members call on Turkey to move forward on freedom of worship

Brussels, 14/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - Three EPP members have published a joint press statement in which they assert “there is evidence that religious freedom is not fully ensured in Turkey”. Elmar Brok of Germany, who chairs the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs; Camiel Eurlings of the Netherlands, who is rapporteur on Turkey; and Antonios Trakatellis of Greece, who is EP Vice President, believe that the “current draft law on religious foundations falls short of European standards”. In their press statement, published after the hearing of Turkey's Chief Negotiator, Ali Babacan, at the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and a meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew, the three EPP members “appeal therefore to the Turkish authorities to amend this draft law in a way that all religious communities established in Turkey can enjoy similar rights as they do in the Member States” of the EU.
