European Parliament lambasts post-election violence

Strasbourg, 08/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - By 80 to 0 with 2 abstentions, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in Strasbourg on Thursday concerning the violent repression of civilians and member of opposition parties and their supporters during demonstrations on 8 June after the postponing of the final outcome of the 15 May general elections in Ethiopia. The violence left 36 people dead, along with more hand a hundred injured and several thousand arrests. The MEPs expressed their solidarity with the Ethiopian people and called for the setting up of an impartial investigation committee to ensure those responsible were brought to justice. The European Parliament says the journalists and other people arrested without charge must be released. It welcomed the recent release of around 4000 prisoners and stressed the important role of the ICRC in defending human rights. In order to ensure the results of the election are unchallenged, MEPs want the EU to provide observers for the process of examining the 299 cases of electoral fraud that have been lodged.
