THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution/luxembourg

04/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - A week ahead of the Luxembourg referendum on the European Constitution, which is due to take place on 10 July, nearly 300 young people took part in a demonstration on Saturday afternoon in the centre of Luxembourg city, against a backdrop of techno music, in support of the constitutional treaty. "We are here to express our support for a Europe where anything is possible, which provides us with reciprocal enrichment, a Europe on which the development of our own country depends so strongly ", explained Nicolas Hirsch, one of the coordinators of "Jonk fir de Jo" (Youth for Yes), a movement supported by the youth organisations of the main Luxembourg political parties, Young Social Christians, Young Socialists, Young Liberals and the Young Greens. Many politicians joined the day's events, among them the vice president of the government and Minister for foreign affairs Jean Asselborn, along with three other ministers from Jean-Claude Juncker's government. "I admire these young people, who are taking position in favour of the Yes even though it is increasingly fashionable for the Left to vote no", Mr Asselborn told AFP, adding: "the no is destructive and leaves no alternative".
