"i2010" and World Information Society Summit on menu for talks

Brussels, 23/06/2005 (Agence Europe) -the joint "Telecommunications/Transport/Energy" Council will begin on 27 June with the telecommunications items, under the chairmanship of Jean-Louis Schiltz, the Luxembourg Minister Delegate for Communications, and will be attended by Commissioner Viviane Reding, who is in charge of the Information Society and Media. It will debate the new "e2010" initiative, which the Commissioner presented on 1 June and which aims to create an overall framework for the information Society and new technologies, which is adapted to developments within a market which has seen an increasing convergence of platforms. "i2010", which will take over from the current action plan eEUROPE 2005 which expires at the end of the year, is based around three priorities: 1) completion of a single European space of information encouraging an open and competitive internal market for the information society and media; 2) boosting innovation and investment in ICT in order to foster growth and employment; 3) the completion of an information society based on inclusion, which gives the priority to improving public services and the standard of living. The ministers will decide whether they feel "i2010" is an adequate basis on which to create policies at national level in this burgeoning sector, which will make a contribution to the achievement of the Lisbon objectives. The second point on the agenda will be an exchange of views on work underway ahead of the forthcoming World Cup information Society Summit, to be held in Tunis from 16 to 18 November. The aim of this Summit is to reach consensus on two essential issues which could not be resolved at the previous meeting in Geneva in late 2003: the governance of the internet and financial mechanisms to be set up in order to reduce the digital divide between the developing and developed countries. The Council is to adopt conclusions on these two points, which will be used to draft an EU Common position. This position will be presented during talks to take place at the meeting of the preparatory committee from 19 to 30 September.
