Brussels, 24/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 23 June in Brussels, the EU/Jordan Association Committee marked the concrete implementation of the “action plan”, approved on 1 June under the neighbourhood policy. Their priorities are democracy, human rights, good governance and combating corruption: the planned cooperation should also promote the role of civil society and women. Security policy and combating terrorism and extremism were also issues. The Commission and Jordan concluded their negotiations on the agricultural part designed to partially liberalise trade and enhance access to European products on the Jordanian market, an agreement which has yet to be formalised. Jordan drew attention to several sensitive products (olive oil, cut flowers etc). On the trade front, Jordan (which has decided on free trade with Israel) wants to be able to benefit from accumulation of origin. The response, similar to that given to countries from the Agadir group which are signatories of free trade agreements with Turkey, is that they would have to await the implementation of the pan-European origin system. The Commission also proposed launching informal discussions on the liberalisation of trade in services, but it will have to wait for a mandate from the Council. In the meantime, a study could be launched into the effects of liberalisation in this sector.
