Brussels, 21/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Jeannot Krecké, The Minister for sport representing the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU, has met European sporting federations and NGOs at a consultation meeting with the sports movement, held by the European Commission in Brussels on 15 June. Referring to the ratification of the European Constitution (before the summit of 16 and 17 June), Mr Krecké regretted the lack of commitment to this text, which recognises sport as a policy in its own right for the first time (article III-282), on the part of the sporting movement. On problems related to the free movement of sports people, he pleaded in favour of the recognition of the specific nature of sport, which he compares to cultural diversity. On the fight against drugs in sport, Mr Krecké said that the world of sport has made enormous steps forward with the adoption of the World Anti-Doping Code, the inauguration of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Anti-Doping Convention, which Unesco is putting the finishing touches to, and stressed the important role of national anti-doping agencies to ensure that controls are carried out frequently, and by encouraging the European Commission to collaborate with the WADA. Mr Krecké did not hide the fact that there is currently tension between the WADA and FIFA, which has not fully transposed the world anti-doping code. The Minister recently held talks with the parties on this, acting as a mediator in his capacity as President of the Council of the EU, and said that he had every reason to hope "that we will find a solution by the end of June, and thus have all federations on board”.
