EUROPEAN COUNCIL/GERMANY: 21/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - German Liberals (hoping to form a coalition with the CDU/CSU after the forthcoming elections at the Bundestag in September), voices were raised in support of British demands for a reduction in CAP spending. Wolgang Gerhardt, Head of the FDP group at the Bundestag (and possible future foreign affairs minister) said in an interview to the Financial Times on Tuesday that he was “not entirely unhappy about the outcome of this summit” in Brussels. He admitted that, “the CDU had a strong agricultural base” but pointed out that the FDP had supported the idea of national co-financing of aid to farmers, “perhaps we should bring it on the table again. It might help restart the debate”. FDP MEP Jordo Chatzimarkakis said in a fiery sounding press statement that he supported Tony Blair's vision, “You're completely right, the current structure of the EU budget is not orientated to the future but to the past”. The MEP also told Tony Blair that what happened at the Brussels summit was “really shameful” (an allusion to Jean-Claude Juncker admission that had felt “ashamed”, faced with the offer from new Member States to sacrifice themselves for a new agreement) by the behaviour of the “losers Chirac and Schröder”, who are “blaming you for the failure of the Summit”.
