17/06/2005 (Agence Europe) -While "welcoming the efforts to establish a common migration and asylum system in Europe", the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has expressed various concerns" in a letter it sent on Wednesday to Jean-Claude Junker, the Luxembourg Prime Minister, whose country now holds the EU Presidency. Stressing that the search for a common policy must involve acknowledging a fundamental right of asylum, the COMECE recommends that the "European Chart of Fundamental Rights should become legally binding as soon as possible". The COMECE also urges the EU to prohibit people being forcibly deported to third countries "unless there have very strong ties with the country in question".
