Opening distillation crisis mechanism for Greek wine

Brussels, 15/06/2005 (Agence Europe) -In an effort to reduce the high stocks of wine with the approach of the new harvest, the European Commission has decided to trigger the distillation crisis mechanism for 340 000 hectolitres (hl) of Greek table wine and t 40 000 hl of quality wine. The minimum purchasing price for wine delivered to the distillery is 1.914 euro for the first category and 2.30 euros for the seconded. Registration for contracts by producers has to be done between 13 June and 1st July 2005. France and Spain were already authorised at the beginning of May to use the distillation crisis mechanism for the respective volumes of 1.5 and 4 million hectolitres (EUROPE 8939). The Commission points out that alcohol from this distillation can not be used for alcohol consumed orally and can only be used for industrial requirements or fuel.
