Brussels, 15/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will soon decide on ending sand-eel fishing at the end of the year, a measure that mainly involves Danish and British boats sharing the Community quota. During the Fisheries Council of December 2004, it was decided that the quota for this fish be reduced by 60% and that supplementary measures were taken if stocks were threatened. Scientific data demonstrates that suspension of this industrial fish is necessary. In 2005, the quota for sand-eel rose to 66,960 tonnes (t), 68,267 t for Denmark and14, 025 t for the United Kingdom. This fish is fished in Norwegian waters, Kattegat and Skagerrak and the North Sea.
