ICT serving democracy: what role for the regions?

Brussels, 03/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 19 May the Walloon regional authority and the Region Nord - Pas de Calais are organising, together with the Committee of the Regions, and with the support of the European Commission, a seminar on the role regional authorities can play in developing the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) at the service of democracy and citizenship. Today, many citizens have access to ICT to get their views on democracy and citizenship across. At the same time, more local authorities are going down this route by adding these digital tools to their usual practices (face to face, public meetings, paper, telephone etc.) to obtain greater transparency, dialogue and concertation on public life. The seminar should allow for better identification of Europe's regional differences in this domain and to understand these practices though case studies, hence making the action of regional authorities more visible at a European level.
