22/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero Waldner is extremely concerned by the deep political instability that Ecuador is experiencing since the Head of State, Lucio Gutierrez (who obtained political asylum in Brazil and is now replaced by Vice-President Palacio) was overthrown by Congress on 20 April. Ms Waldner states in a press release that it is essential for all parties to show proof of respect for the democratic institutions and rule of law. The Commission calls on all Ecuadorians to work together to strengthen the democratic framework and guarantee a return to constitutional normality as soon as possible. The Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council says in a declaration that it “deplores the deaths which occurred during recent demonstrations and appeals to the government and to political forces to find a peaceful, consensual and negotiated solution to the present crisis (…) observing fundamental freedoms and abiding by the principle of separation of powers”.
