Brussels, 22/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament on 20 April adopted the report from the Polish MEP Bogdan Klich (EPP-DE) on the Security Research Programme which will form part of the EU's 7th Framework Research and Development Programme (FRDP). In this report, which will be examined at the June plenary session in Strasbourg, he particularly insists on the need for this programme to be granted one billion euros annually, as originally proposed by a panel of experts convened by the Commission. This is a demand which would double the sum proposed by the Commission under the 7th FRDP: 3.987 billion euros for security and space in the period 2007-2013 (EUROPE 8923). The Klich report also insists on the need to coordinate the Commission's work on security research and that of the European Defence Agency, which focuses more on military research. Given the inevitable overlap between these two sectors, there is a need to develop synergies to avoid duplication (see other news item).
