Brussels, 07/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner Franco Frattini stated on Wednesday that the borders between the old and new Member States would be lifted as of October 2007. He said at a press conference that, from October 2007, States like Poland, which do not belong to the Schengen Area, will enter. There may be a delay of several months, but no more, he added. So far, the Council has set itself the objective of 2007 without being more exact, with the condition that the second generation Schengen Information System (SISII) already functions as it should and that the States concerned respect a number of criteria. The Commissioner believes these conditions will then be filled. In a press release, MEP Joachim Wuermeling (CSU) describes this declaration as “irresponsible” and stresses that the decision is not in the hands of the Commission.
