THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/usa/iraq

07/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - During a meeting of the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee with the new US Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick (EUROPE 8921), Italian MEP Vittorio Agnoletto (GUE) was keen to point out his opposition to the war in Iraq. He informed Condoleezza Rice's deputy that 72 MEPs has already given their support to the UN proposal for setting up an independent enquiry to shed light on the circumstances in which, during the release of the Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena after her kidnapping in Iraq, US soldiers killed Nicola Calipari, the leaders of Italian intelligence services who had just freed her. Mr Agnoletto asked Mr Zoellick, “Will you accept this proposal or will you use the right of veto to prevent an independent commission from finding out the truth” adding, Given the fact that so many western citizens and Iraqis have been killed by so-called 'friendly fire' I would like you to provide information on the code of conduct which US soldiers at checkpoints must respect”. In a press release, Mr Agnoletto complained that all his questions remained unanswered.
