Brussels, 01/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - On the fringes of the meeting of the European Parliament's Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities Committee in Brussels on Wednesday 30 March, Commissioner Vladimir Spidla strenuously denounced abuse by opponents of the European Constitution in France on the draft versions of the working time directive and the services directive, commenting to AFP that the use of the texts was unfair because the problem of the Constitution is a different problem from the services and working time directives. He told AFP that the two directives had been unveiled based on the Nice Treaty, currently in force but which will be replaced by the European Constitution, if it is ratified by the EU25. Spidla called for a reasonable solution to the two legislative proposals. The supporters of a 'no' vote on the Constitution argue that the draft directive on working time (see Europe No. 8791) being 'further proof of the EU's slippage towards the free market'.
