Javier Solana welcomes referral to International Criminal Court of crimes committed in Darfur

Brussels, 01/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for CFSP Javier Solana welcomed the resolution adopted on Thursday evening by the United Nations Security Council and referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) of crimes against humanity perpetrated in Darfur. In a statement published on this occasion, Javier Solana states that he welcomes the resolution adopted at the UN Security Council. Reconciliation in Sudan involves the end of impunity in Darfur, he adds, saying that procedures opened at the International Criminal Court will now contribute to this. Yesterday evening's vote also marks a crucial stage in defence of human rights and respect of international law, he said, in the belief that the Security Council has fully played its role. He is also naturally pleased with the efforts made by all European members of the Security Council in agreement as well as the effectiveness of transatlantic dialogue.
