Brussels, 22/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Luxembourg presidency of the Council adopted a declaration on behalf of the Twenty-Five on the situation in Kirghizstan following the parliamentary elections and recent demonstrations in Jala Abad and Osh. “The EU is appealing to all parties to demonstrate non-violently and participate constructively through open dialogue and cooperation in settling differences”. It also underlines full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The EU is calling on the Kirghizstan authorities to act peacefully with the opposition and for the latter to renounce all illegal action. The EU says the government must pursue democratic reforms and is ready to collaborate with the country to promote OSCE values and principles. Javier Solana the EU High Representative for CFSP said that he was “concerned” that parliamentary elections in Kirghizstan did not conform to OSCE criteria and international standards. He called on all parties to make a commitment to non-violent dialogue in an effort to find a “viable and democratic solution” to current problems.
