21/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - The President of the sub-committee on human rights of the European Parliament, French Green Hélène Flautre, has called for European mediation in Chechnya which, in her view, is “crucial” to put an end to a conflict which has been ongoing for ten years “and which has already cut Chechnya off from 20% of its population”. At a time when President Putin, “who was behind the killing of Aslan Maskhadov”, was in Paris for talks on Friday with President Chirac, Chancellor Schröder and Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero, Ms Flautre emphasised the need to start a dialogue based on the “concrete proposals” drawn up at the recent meeting in London between the mothers of Russian soldiers and representatives in exile of the Maskhadov government. “It is this opportunity which Europe should now seize, abandoning its disgusting diplomatic games with Putin which actually give him carte blanche to pursue his violent and destructive policies in Chechnya”, she said.
