07/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Friday the Luxembourg presidency adopted on the behalf of the EU a declaration for the adoption of a new constitution for Burundi (EUROPE 3 March, p 6 for the declaration by European Commissioner Louis Michel). The declaration affirms that, “the EU welcomes the successful referendum for the adoption of a new constitution, which took place on 28 February 2005 in Burundi, as well as the high turnout. The adoption of the new Burundi constitution is a crucial step bin the return to peace and stability in Burundi, as well as throughout the whole Great Lakes region. The EU is encouraging Burundi to take the remaining steps as soon as possible for implementing the electoral process stipulated by the peace agreements. The EU is calling for the participation of all political forces in this process and is appealing to them to unconditionally accept the expression of the will of the people”.
