Strasbourg, 25/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Drawing to a close its debate over the last sessions of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre (Brazil) and the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), the European Parliament adopted a resolution stressing the need for globalisation to be accompanied by greater efforts to cut poverty, but rejected the idea of unconditionally dropping the debt for countries not prioritising cutting poverty (see EUROPE of 24 February, p.15). The EP is pleased that the Davos Forum set out a series of priority actions, launched an anti-corruption partnership and selected 29 companies as 'Technology Pioneers. Commenting that more Chinese and Indian captains of industry now attend the Davos Forum, the EP again stressed the need to improve the competititiveness of Europe. According to the EP, the World Social Forum should also set priority actions that can actually be implemented, rather than producing 352 proposals accepted by working groups as happened this year. At the same time, the EP reaffirmed its commitment to the Millennium Development Targets and welcomed the fact the two forums highlighted fairer and freer trade.
