Brussels, 08/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 21 February, EUFOR troops, the European Union's military mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, are to launch a vast operation to harvest illegal weapons. The door-to-door harvest operation will be held in Sarajevo and East Sarajevo and will last two weeks, an EUFOR press release states. It will be conducted in partnership with the authorities of Bosnia and Republika Srpska (one of the two Bosnian entities) as well as with the country's police force. “The success of this operation will depend upon the cooperation of the citizens of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, who will be asked to voluntarily hand over any illegal weapons, ammunition or explosive devices they may possess, without fear of legal action”, the press release states. Recalling the danger that such weapons (in particular mines and grenades) represent for security, especially for children, EUFOR encourages the citizens of Bosnia to “use this opportunity to make Bosnia and Herzegovina a safer place”. A similar operation was carried out in Mostar in November and December 2004, with “excellent” results, the press release states.
