Schmitt report favours single licence for air-traffic controllers

Brussels, 07/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - The committee on transports of the European Parliament unanimously approved the report by German Christian Democrat Ingo Schmitt, who supports the idea of creating a standard Community licence for air traffic controllers. Among the advantages of harmonising national systems for issuing licences for air traffic controllers are: improved safety (through improved communication) and the possibility for controllers to work in other countries of the EU. The Parliamentary committee called for air traffic controllers' training to lay greater emphasis on safety and crisis-management techniques (in case of an aeroplane hijacking, for instance, or threats of bomb attacks).
