Brussels, 07/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the European Commission unveiled a draft regulation concerning a new Visa Information System (VIS) and the exchange of data between Member States on short-stay visas and visa refusals, alphanumeric until 2006 but including biometric details in 2007. Franco Frattini, the Commissioner responsible for Justice, Freedom and Security, said: "VIS has two main goals: contributing to the internal security of the Member States and the fight against illegal immigration.” The regulation will be adopted by the European Parliament and Council using codecision.
