Parliament objects to relaxation of meat and bone meal ban

Brussels, 02/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - Last Thursday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it objects to any relaxation of the 2001 Community legislation on the ban on using meat and bone meal in livestock feed and feed for slaughter animals. The EP is opposed to the European Commission's proposal aimed at authorising the use of fish meal for cattle feed (bovines, sheep and goats). MEPs therefore call on the Commission to "withdraw" its proposal of regulation amending Annex IV of the 2001 Regulation concerning animal feed. The Parliament greatly doubts that the EU Member States have sufficient experienced laboratory personnel to carry out controls on fish meal. Also, MEPs call for strict controls to be effected on all animal feed and call for a scientific analysis to be made of the acceptable limit values for dioxin present in fish meal currently used for pig and poultry feed.
