Cicero Foundation seminar

Brussels, 25/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Cicero Foundation, headed by Marcel H.Van Herpen will be organising on 18 and 19 November in Paris, in its Grands Débats series, a seminar for experts on the theme "Refugees and immigration policy in the European Union: towards a new approach?". On 18 November, the work will be introduced by Raymond Hall, Director of the European Office at the UN High Commission for Refugees. Contributions will follow by Sandra Pratt ("Asylum and Immigration" at the European Commission), and Frank Laczko (International Migration Organisation in Geneva). There will then be two workshops, on European refugee and immigration policy. Richard Williams from the European Council for Refugees and Exiles, will be speaking on the recent measures taken by the EU. On 19 November, following an intervention by Marcel H.Van Herpen (on "the use of policy on migration" and "post modern anti-immigration movements, like the Dutch example with Pim Fortuyn), Patrick Simon from the National Institute for Demographic Studies from Paris, will speak, as well as Jean-Christophe Dumont from the OECD. After the workshop on assessing the impact of the Treaty of Amsterdam in this area, Danny Sriskandarajah from the Institute for Public Policy Research in London will evaluate the consequences of EU enlargement and the British example.
