New negotiations on gender equality at work

Brussels, 12/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The framework agreement on stress in the workplace having been welcomed and signed by the social partners (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.14), new negotiations are getting underway on equal opportunities for men and women at work, the Secretary General of the European Confederation of Executives (CEC), Claude Cambus, has announced in a press release. The CEC will commit to show that on this, executives are no better off than anyone else: women have just as much trouble, if not more, in getting equal treatment, which gets worse the higher up one goes within the company hierarchy. The more women there are in decision-making positions, the more women will be taken into consideration in general within companies, explains Alexe von Wurmb, who represents the CEC in the group in charge of this negotiation. He recognises that in order to improve the access of women to top-level posts, there should be a change in the enterprise culture and a work organisation which allows greater reconciliation of work and family life.
