12/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on Monday the European Commission welcomed the "great success" of the OAA meeting on 4-8 October. The meeting aimed to work out possible options for a Material Transfer Agreement" (MTA) within the international treaty on phytogenetic resources for food and agriculture. The MTA sets out the rights and obligations for suppliers and recipients of seed used in farming research and in the creation of new varieties of plants. Experts, ms of the EU, the OECD and developing countries attempted to establish the best ways of making sure that every country benefited from the commercialisation on seed in major crops. The results of the Brussels meeting will act as a basis for the OAA meeting in November, where political decisions are expected on implementing the treaty on phytogenetic resources.
