Brussels, 04/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - Mary Coughlan, 39, will be the new agriculture minister in Ireland, following the reshuffle of Bertie Ahern's cabinet on 29 September. Ms Coughlan will replace Joe Walsh, who is retiring after ten yeas as minister for agriculture. Since 2002, Coughlan has been minister of social and family affairs. In Greece Evangelos Bassiakos, 50, was appointed minister for agriculture on 23 September, following the sudden resignation of Savvas Tsitouridis. The latter was accused by the Socialist opposition for having abused his position for getting his son into Athens University when he did not met the admissions criteria. MP for New Democracy in the Greek parliament since 1989, Bassiakos has been secretary of state in the agriculture and food department since the formation of the Costas Karamanlis government last March.
