Strasbourg, 14/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Group of Greens/EFA would have liked during the debate on Wednesday on the massacre at the school in Beslan for a connection to be made with what is happening in Chechnya, as, if one wants to know how men become "such monsters", one cannot avoid the debate on Chechnya, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-President of the Group, told the press on Tuesday. In Beslan, the "Rubicon of horrors" was crossed, he said, noting that Russia is carrying out a "colonial war" in Chechnya, the Chechens being like the American Indians who, when persecuted by the whites, became "cruel fighters". Europe must do more in favour of a political solution in Chechnya, the German Green member said, regretting that even his "preferred Foreign Minister" (an allusion to German Green Joschka Fischer) is no longer rallying to the cause. We have a privileged relationship with Moscow, Mr Cohn-Bendit said, adding "we must be able to tell Putin that the road of dictatorship that he is proposing, however enlightened, is a road that leads nowhere".
