China's biggest car producer, SAIC - SHANGHAI AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY (EUR 18.2 bn turnover in 2003), is planning to buy up, in stages, MG ROVER, the last independent UK car manufacturer as part of a technology transfer plan signed in June between the two countries. This would be the first acquisition by a Chinese company of a European car manufacturer.
