Bernard Bot's visit to Indonesia will include negotiations over ASEM Summit

Brussels, 25/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - Dutch foreign minister Bernard Bot, President of the Council of the EU, started a three-day visit to Indonesia on Wednesday, where he will be meeting with his Indonesian counterpart, Hassan Wirayuda. During their meeting, the two politicians will discuss bilateral issues but will also consider EU affairs, like preparations for the visit of an EU Troika to Indonesia this autumn and the thorny issue of Burma (see Europe of 10 August). The question of Burma still seems to be an obstacle to the EU's participation in the ASEM Summit in Hanoi scheduled for 8 and 9 October, although the Asian Political New press agency, quoting an ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) representatives, reports that a compromise agreement has been reached, involving the participation at the Summit of a lesser ranking Burmese representative, the Burmese foreign minister. According to the same source, this decision is expected to be formalised during a meeting on 3 September, in order to enable three ASEAN countries (Cambodia, Laos and Burma), as well as the ten new Member States of the EU to integrate ASEM and take part in meetings in Hanoi. The minister for foreign affairs from the Netherlands refused to confirm any progress, preferring to highlight the fact that the presidency's special envoy, the former Dutch minister for foreign affairs and former Commissioner for external relations, Hans Van den Broek, who had toured Asian capitals in July, had to report back on the situation to Mr Bot.
