Brussels, 12/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has submitted the regulation on fish quotas in the Greenland area (transposing the latest agreements into EU law) to the Council. The regulation increases the Greenland halibut quota by 800 tonnes (for the Portuguese fishing fleet); the black halibut quota (Eastern waters) by 4200 tonnes (for Germany and Britain); and the northern prawn quota by 4000 tonnes (Eastern waters), to be split 50/50 between Denmark and France. A new 1000 tonne quota is introduced for queen crabs and a 2000 tonne quota for by-catches of flat fish in the Faeroe Islands (up to 100 tonnes of cod, along with swordfish, skate and tusk). The fishing agreement with Greenland applies until December 2006 and foresees financial compensation (EUR 31 million) and budget support for restructuring fishing policy (EUR 10 million).
