Josep Borrell on Athens Olympics

Brussels, 12/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell Fontelles, has sent Athens mayor Dora Bakoyannis a letter wishing the city the greatest success in the Olympic Games (13-29 August). He commented that the citizens of Athens had demonstrated with their commitment, verve and determination, their desire to make the Games an event to go down in sporting history in the twenty-first century. The Olympic Village and other transformations will help confirm the European role of the Greek capital, he continued. In a message to the Greek prime minister Kostas Karamanlis, the EP President hoped that the spirit of the Olympic Truce, synonym of peace in a world where the most painful and bloody wars are unfortunately still occurring, would guide the delegations travelling to Athens. Borrell said that the eyes of the world would be turned to Athens on Friday and he hoped they would see the Olympics as an illustration of the granting of mutual respect and solidarity between athletes and communities.
