Brussels, 03/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - The 28th edition of the Olympic Games will be opening in Athens on 13 August and will bring together some 10,500 athletes from around the world to compete in 28 disciplines and fight for more than 900 medals. The Games will end on 29 August. The European Commission has wanted to be involved in this event, which is a vehicle for the essential values of fair-play and respect for others, by allowing 28 young European sportsmen and women to take part in the events, within the context of the European Year of Education through Sport (EYES) 2004 initiative. (See EUROPE of 2 August, p.7). European Commissioner Viviane Reding stressed on this occasion that "The Olympic Year 2004 and EYES raise awareness of the various values inherent in sport, creating a unique atmosphere, beyond nationality, culture, religion and politics".
