Conferences in August and September

Here is a small selection of conferences to do with health and social issues:

10th European Symposium on Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour: this conference will be held from the 25 to 28 August in Copenhagen and is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention. Info: http://www.suicideprevention.dk

Shaping the EU Health Community: organised by the NIZW (Netherlands Institute for Care and Welfare), this conference, which will be held in the Hague on the 7, 8 and 9 September will discuss all aspects of the EU's public health work programme. Representatives from European consumer, patient, doctor and insurance associations as well as other interest groups will discuss in particular socio-economic aspects of the drug and medical appliance market, long-term care and cross-border care. Among the speakers are: Dutch Health Minister Hans Hoogervorst, Ilona Kickbush (Professor of Global Health Governance, Yale University), Gerard Hastings (Professor of Social Marketing, University of Strathclyde, Scotland), the President of the Dutch Federation of Cancer Patients Else Borst-Eilers, philosophy professor Peter Sloterdijk (Hochschule für Gestaltung, Karlsruhe), the President of the Standing Committee of European Doctors Bernard Grewin, the Director General of the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industries Trevor Jones and Niels Rossing from the European Health Telematics Association. The Director of the Dutch Consumers and Patients Federation Iris van Bennkom has been invited by the Dutch presidency to present the conclusions of the conference to the EU Health Ministers at an informal meeting on 9 and 10 September in Noordwijk.

5th European Conference on Health Economics: the Health and Social Care department of the London School of Economics and Political Science is organising this conference on 8 to 11 of September in London. Contact: eche2004@lse.ac.uk or a.j.oliver@lse.ac.uk

HIV/AIDS epidemic in Europe: Health Ministers and experts from all over Europe are expected in Vilnius on 16 and 17 September to debate a package of measures designed to combat the increase in the number of HIV infections in the European Union and its neighbouring countries. Jointly organised by the Lithuanian government and the European Commission, this conference aims to build a consensus in favour of actions at European level involving various partners. It will be opened by the Prime Minister Algirdas Bazauskas and Commissioner Pavel Telicka.
