Brussels, 03/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - The EU High representative for the CFSP Javier Solana is asking Russia to use its influence with the leaders of the separatist Moldovan province of Transnitria to put an end to actions led by the armed police in the region against several Moldova schools which have been closed. In a letter to the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, Mr Solana insisted that Moscow should ask the self-proclaimed leaders of Transnitria to halt their campaign against Moldovan schools and return to the negotiating-table with the Moldovan leaders without delay. The EU is available to cooperate with its Russian partners to find a solution. Mr Solana is also in contact with the Moldovan authorities, whom he has asked to refrain from any measures that would lead to a further escalation of the situation, a message which he had already relayed to the Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin in a telephone conversation on Wednesday.
