THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/afganistan

13/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the External Relations Council adopted conclusions on Afghanistan. Foreign affairs ministers from the Twenty Five were please that presidential elections would take place on 19 October. These elections constitute an important stage in the political process, which should lead to the construction of a "democratic, stable and prosperous" country. The EU understands that for "technical and logistical reasons" it will not be possible to organise parliamentary elections at the same time as presidential elections (as previously planned). The election will therefore will take place in spring 2005. The EU is ready to assist the Afghan government to ensure that the elections are free and fair, state the conclusions of the Council.
