Budget multiplied by five for trans-European networks?

Brussels, 13/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is expected to propose a considerable increase in the budget for the development of trans-European transport and energy networks for the period 2007-2013. According to various Community sources, during the debate to take place within the College on the forthcoming financial perspectives this Wednesday, Commissioner Loyola de Palacio is to propose multiplying the budget for TENs by five for the period 2000-2006, initially 4.6 billion EUR. She is also set to propose to extend the Marco Polo programme (2003-2010) to 2013, to encourage the transfer of road freight to other modes of transport which are less harmful to the environment, to include the "sea motorways" which belong to the new TEN priority projects. The budgetary envelope proposed for the period 2007-2013 for the period 2003-2006 was 75 million EUR. Lastly, the Commission may propose to add almost 1 billion EUR to the Community budget earmarked to kick of the satellite radio-navigation system, Galileo.
