MEPs support dialogue between India and Pakistan

Brussels, 01/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of six MEPs, led by John Cushnahan (EPP-ED, Ireland), travelled to Delhi and both sides of Kashmir from 20 to 25 June. In a press release, John Cushnahan explains that the delegation had provided its support to dialogue between India and Pakistan, including discussions on the Kashmir issue. He said there were three sides with legitimate interests in finding a solution to the complex issue, namely the Indian government, the Pakistani government and the people and representatives of Kashmir, with the latter group in particular suffering from the interminable conflict. To gain a clearer view of the situation, the EP delegation met with various figureheads in the conflict, like N.N. Vohra, the Indian government's special representative for Jammu and Kashmir and Srinivas Kumar Sinha, the governor of Kashmir. The press release explains that the MEPs will write a report, which may be of service to the EU in its policy on Kashmir. The other members of the delegation were Bob van den Bos, David Bowe, Glyn Ford, Peter Gahrton and Luisa Morgantini.
