Brussels, 21/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Seven "cultural itineraries" among the most emblematic of the continent have been highly commended by the Council of Europe at a ceremony in Strasbourg on 16 June. This initiative was launched in 1987, initially to return to prominence famous paths used in the Middle Ages by pilgrims from all continents coming to St James of Compostella. It was then widened to include itineraries on other themes, to promote a common cultural heritage in Europe. The seven journeys chosen this year are: the paths of St James of Compostella, dating from the 11th Century and which extend across the continent; Architecture without Borders, on the rural architecture of Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg; Mozart, illustrating the composer's long journeys across ten countries of Europe; Schickhardt, retracing the influence of the architect on towns in France and Germany; Al-Andalus heritage, illustrating the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula in from the 8th to the 15th Century; the road of the Castillian language, showing the development and international expansion of the language.
