Brussels, 21/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have polluted the debate between the Council of Ministers of the EU with regard to the action plan recently presented by the European Commission to relaunch organic farming. On Monday in Luxembourg, many Member States opposed the idea of Commissioner Franz Fischler, for tolerance levels for accidental traces of GMOs in products used in organic farming to be themselves general labelling thresholds (0.9%). Italian minister, Giovanni Alemanno, requested the threshold for organic farming to be different for that on traditional farming. This opinion was shared by his Greek counterpart. Austrian minister, Josef Pröll, underlined that they needed to avoid any kind of contamination of organic products by GMOs. EUROPE ill return to the results of a public debate on this subject.
