Brussels, 27/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Netherlands, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, which will successively chair the Council of the European Union over the next eighteen months, have sent NATO a "non-paper" on relations between NATO and the European Union. This confidential document examines the possibility of extending relations between the European Union and NATO in areas other than military, which are already governed by the Berlin+ agreements. According to British sources, these new cooperation areas could include Afghanistan and the Middle East. While the Netherlands has traditionally supported parallel European/NATO development, Luxembourg is more in favour of consolidating the European pole before thinking about enlarging the field of cooperation with NATO, indicated a source close to the dossier.
