Brussels, 19/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - The representatives of a serious of African NGOs meet at the European Parliament from 15 to 17 April, invited by the United European Left/Green Nordic Left, to discuss the causes of poverty and the impact of globalisation on sub-Saharan Africa. Senegal national Yassine Fall, from the NGO Aide Transparence, slammed the trade agreements between Africa and the EU which she described as failing to take account of women as farmers and processors of food. She condemned what she sees as a form of neo-liberalism and called for the EU's relations with Africa to be rethought. Zimbabwe national Yash Tandon, South east Africa Trade Information and Negotiation Initiative (SEATINI), said the main cause of poverty in sub-Sahara Africa is the establishment of economic partnerships based on unequal strength. He said the credo of funders was to create conditions in Africa to allow Western companies to make more profit. Demba Moussa Dembele, from the Forum pour l'alternance africaine in Senegal, said that the debt was one o the causes for Africa's economy not developing and was a source of domination and exploitation of the rich over the poor.
