24/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - "If our forecasts for stepping up household consumer demand do not prove correct, we shall review our assessment of the situation", Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank, said in an interview on Wednesday with the German economic daily Handelsblatt. This is the first time since he took over at the head of the ECB that he has clearly spoken of the possibility of bringing down ECB interest rates. In an interview with Le Monde on Thursday, Guy Quaden, the President of the National Bank of Belgium (and member of the ECB Governing Council), pointed out that they "still have other weapons" for reducing rates "if the prospect of inflation makes it possible and if the prospects of activity make it desirable".
