Brussels, 17/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (CESI) adopted during the meeting of its executive committee on 10 March in Brussels an opinion on the state of progress in implementation of the Lisbon Strategy, in the fields of education and training (Rapporteur: Monique Cartigny, CSNE - Confédération syndicale de l'éducation nationale, France). CESI invites the Commission and Member States to review their goals as well as the achievement of these goals without, however, sacrificing the quality of results. CESI General Secretary Helmut Müllers, for his part, insisted on the need to have more means from both public and private funds. In order to reactivate the Lisbon Strategy on education, CESI also insists on strengthening language teaching, and welcomes the Commission's call (which is in line with the OECD conclusions) to rethink the teaching profession to make it more attractive by 2010. He also recommends better use of communication technology to promote lifelong learning (Information: http://www.cesi.org ).
