16/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - CSU MEP Ingo Friedrich stated that following last Thursday's terrorist attacks in Madrid, if there were a "serious terrorist threat", the Bundeswehr would be able to intervene. The police force was too small, explained the vice president of the Bavarian CSU, who called for an amendment to the fundamental German law to more effectively combat terrorism. Friedrich thought that in such a situation, it would be appropriate to provisionally re-introduce border controls. The MEP pointed out that the Schengen Information Service (SIS) for searching for people would not (for technical reasons) be extended to the new Member States and that the "SIS 2" currently being prepared would not be working before 2006. This explained why SIS 2 was of the highest priority, so that the authorities in future Member States would be able to reach the "high standards of Schengen".
