Ombudsman criticises EP's inaction

Strasbourg, 12/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - Further to a complaint by a member of staff at the European Parliament, the European Ombudsman, Nikoforos Diamandouros, has criticised the Parliament for seemingly having "omitted to take adequate measures to promote the application of its internal rules on the use of tobacco in its buildings". Parliament claims to have taken all the necessary technical and administrative measures, but there are people who do not feel bound by the rules. The Ombudsman reminds the Parliament of the legal liability which could ensue from exposing staff to cigarette smoke in the workplace, given its potential risk to health.
